Introduce your children to the joys of the mountains during a great family holiday. Luz and the surrounding valleys have a huge range of easily accessible and fun activities to get everyone out and about each day.
Within walking distance from the centre of Luz you have Acrobranch, the high ropes course (with beginner to advanced levels), the local swimming pool (with paddling pool, shallow pool and big pool), the castle (great picnic spot), kids play areas in Esterre and St Sauveur (which makes for a nice stroll for parents and an enticing destination for children!), the Solferino Chapel (another good picnic spot, with tadpole pond), trampolines with harnesses and an old fashioned carousel in the main square, tennis courts along with a hidden river beach and paddling spot. The J-Club is a daily kids activity club – they speak some English and your kids might learn a bit of French.
Up the valley (you can catch the bus, or drive) you have the swimming pool, ice rink and Bob Luge in Gèdre, and the Gavarnie Cirque which has donkeys for hire so parents can walk and kids can ride. Down the valley the SNCF bus heads towards Lourdes a couple of times per day and can drop you off at the “Parc Animalier des Pyrenees” where you can see all the Pyrenean wildlife (including some bears) close up. Children can go in and feed the marmots (see photo top centre). The bird show at Donjon des Aigles is spectacular and a crowd pleaser for all the family, and the bike path along the old railway line running from Pierrefitte to Lourdes is another excellent activity with smaller children because the path is almost flat. For “off-piste” there are a huge number of paths around the Argeles lake which are also easy and fun.
For easy ways to get high up in the mountains without a big walk there is the spectacular Pic du Midi cable car (just over the Col du Tourmalet from Luz), the Lac de Gaube cable car (up from Cauterets) and further afield, the Artouste Little Train.
We provide you with a folder of information on all the sites and activities of interest in Luz and the surrounding valleys, along with a walking map and notes for a couple of short family friendly walks around Luz.
