Thursday: Arrive in Gavarnie and 30 min walk up to the Grange de Holle

Grange-de-Holle1Arrive at Lourdes airport or train station and take a bus to Gavarnie village (2€, approximately 1hour 40 minutes, only from start July until end Aug, outside these times there is a bus to Luz and then taxi from there). You will be greeted by your qualified mountain leader before settling in and meeting around 6pm for a drink before dinner and an overview of the days ahead.

Friday: Hike to the Piméné summit (2800m)

Eat a good breakfast before leaving around 8am. You have a 1500m climb to the summit and the views are awe-inspiring all the way up. At the top you have a short ridge to reach the summit for views of the famous Mont Perdu, along with the famous glacial cirques, Gavarnie, Estaubé and S_landscape_PimeneTroumouse. These limestone formations have been carved out by the head of the glacier over successive glaciations and result in dramatic waterfalls such as the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie with its 423m vertical drop.

Saturday: Summit the peaks of the Cirque de Gavarnie (+3000m)

After breakfast we drive up to the departure point at 2200m. Depending on conditions, we will either ascend the Casque or the Taillon (or if we’re lucky, both). The two 3000m peaks are connected via a ridge that encloses the Gavarnie Cirque. You’ll start at a height of 2200m and cross from France to Spain through the extraordinary missing tooth gap in the frontier that is the Breche de Roland (2,800m), before eventually reaching the summit (3007m or 3140m).

Sunday: Climb the Petit Vignemale (3032m)

Our last climb starts with a drive up to the Ossoue dam at 1800m. From here we follow the slightly vertigo-inducing GR10 path up to the Baysellance Refuge, which at 2650m, is S_Landscape_peopleWeb12the highest in the Pyrenees. It's a good stopping point before we begin our final climb to the summit of the Petit Vignemale. Nestled in the centre of the range at 3032m we are rewarded with views of the Ossoue Glacier and Gaube Valley.

Monday: Journey home

It’s time to say goodbye. Departure time is approximately 11am when the bus leaves from Gavarnie headed for Lourdes train station and airport (again, the bus from Gavarnie is only July-August so outside these times we can organise a taxi to Luz and then bus, or taxi all the way to Lourdes).

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts. When no buses are available from mid-Sept onwards we will assure transfers to and from Gavarnie.

Located in the heart of the Gavarnie Cirque, the Refuge Grange de Holle is a rustic campsite concealed from the crowds. The campsite is an excellent base for hikers as it is close to peaks inside the central zone of the Pyrenees National Park. Option to upgrade to a dorm room inside the hostel, 66€.

Just a short 20-minute walk from the Gavarnie village, you can spend your evenings by the campfire, try local delicacies in the converted barn and sleep under the stars. The facilities are shared, there is a dining room complete with a cosy fireplace, a meeting room and a terrace ideal for soaking up the sunshine.
