Oetztal (Austria)

Ski to the resting place of the 'Ice Man'

Oetzal Tour

This classic ski tour is set amongst the towering peaks and huge glaciers of the Oetztal moutains, made famous by the discovery of the 'Ozzsti, the Ice Man' on the Similaun glacier by Erika and Helmut Simon while they were trekking along the Hauslabjoch in 1991. He was found 10m inside the Italian border and now rests in a museum in the Alta Badia town of Bolzano. Scientists think that Oezski is 5500 years old.

Our ski tour sets out from the village of Vent, at the very end of the valley. The ski route links three mountain huts, we stay two nights in two of them (both with hot showers), meaning this is a more relaxed and flexible tour than some. The options are enormous, and a big advantage of this tour. In good weather we can ski and climb to the Hinter Schwarze (3500m), Similaun (3600m), Fluchtkogel (3500m) and the highest peak in the area, the Wild Spitze (3765m). This tour offers good skiing at high altitude on moderate slopes with the opportunity to 'peak bag' each day.

¤ Ski the highest peak in the Tyrol, the Wildspitze (3765m)
¤ Classic mountaineering peaks on offer each day
¤ Simple but varied ski descents
¤ Nice refuges and good food

Oetztal1Day One: Arrival in Innsbruck and transfer to the village of Vent. We meet in the evening to discuss the week and check equipment.

Day Two: Our first day takes us to the Martin Busche Refuge, where we will spend two nights, about three hours on skins from Vent. We check in, leave our heavy gear, and head out again to the Hauslabkogel peak (3403m). Nice ski back down to the hut.

Day Three: Leaving the Martin Busche hut we climb via the Marzellferner glacier up to Hinter Schwarze (3535m). Descent back to Martin Busche refuge.

Oetztal2Day Four: Heading out from the refuge we climb to the Similaun summit (3606m) and ski down to the refuge of the same name, just over the border in Italy.

Day Five: Today is a big day and possibly the longest on the tour. We leave the hut and climb to the Hauslabjoch – spectacular! We go and explore the area around the Hauslab where the Iceman was found in 1991.  Then we have a long descent on a huge glacier down to the Rofen Ache river valley before  its skins on and a long climb up to the Guslar Spitz. Then we ski down simple slopes to the Vernagt Refuge (where we also spend two nights).

Oetztal3Day Six: There is a huge choice of day routes from Vernagt and we head out on a day tour with light packs to ski a peak of the group's choice and then return to the hut - try the Schwarzwand, Hochvernagt or the Fluchtkogel.

Day Seven: The week culminates with a long climb to the highest peak in the Oetztal - the Wildspitzt at 3770m. This is a 1600m climb over stunning terrain and ends with a fantastic ski descent back to Vent and Haus Eberhard.

Day Eight: Return to Innsbruck for connecting flights home.
