Using Hotel Les Templiers in Luz as your base you can ski in all three of the valley’s resorts as you please, or buy the 6 day Tourmalet/Luz-Ardiden/Cauterets/Pic du Midi pass for 155€ for great value and variety.
Luz Ardiden is the perfect place to pack a lot of skiing into one or two days. Two fast 6 man lifts take you up the two main sectors of the mountain (Aulian and Bederet) and make sure you fit the maximum amount of skiing into the day. There are 26 runs in total, 3 black, 15 red, 4 blue (2 with panoramic views) and 4 green. The beginners area is very nicely set up in front of the cafeteria area – its much easier to navigate around the green and blue runs at Luz Ardiden than it is in Barèges for example. There is also a nice luge run next to the kids area and new last year, a tire tube run!
Ski for free during the 5 days of Ski Cadeaux from the 9-13 January and the 26-30 March 2012.
The Domaine du Tourmalet is the largest ski field in the French Pyrenees. With 69 pistes (5 black, 20 red, 21 blue and 23 green) you will have trouble getting around the entire domain in one day. Add the Pic du Midi de Bigorre into the mix and you have a super ski area. With high altitude restaurants dotted around the three mountain sides the Tourmalet ski area has everything for some superb days out.
Situated close to the Spanish border and facing north the Gavarnie ski domain has fabulous snow, some lovely wide blue slopes along with challenging reds and blacks. The view from the top of the Morgats button lift over the Gavarnie Cirque is not to be missed. For beginners the 5km green run is a lovely way to begin your ski experience.
In the neighbouring valley the Cauterets ski resort provides you with another skiing option in the Cirque de Lys. Cauterets has north and east facing slopes which also keep the snow well.
After a day out on the slopes return to a warm drink in front of the fire at Hotel les Templiers before having dinner in the creperie/restaurant (savory galetttes and sweet crepes, cheese fondu, local meat dishes, hearty soups and winter salades). The almost all organic buffet breakfast, with home-made natural yogurt, cereals, bread, jam, juice, hot drinks will get you off to a great start each morning.
