Itinerary

Day 1

An introduction to the pastoral and historical aspects of the region. Visit the Luz valley to get your bearings : 10th-century Château Ste-Marie at Esterre, old paths to the small villages of Vizos and Saligos, churches of Sère and Esquièze, Old houses and bits of history in our notes give insights into what you are walking past. Four options here, from 2h to full day walk, 5 km & +/- 300 m to 15 km & +/-1000 m. Perfect for a warm up or a half rest day, or a big climb high above the valley.

Day 2

You take the bus to Pierrefitte and from the railway station there climb to the historic Poueyaspé chapel, which marks the site where St Savin had his hermitage. Gentler option available via St Savin from the next bus stop along. Lovely views over the Argeles valley. Visit the pretty village of St Savin and its impressive church on the way down. 11 km, +/- 560 m for full tour.  Extension possible to the Coutres barns along an centuries old stone walled path.

Day 3

Walk from Luz to Barèges (or vice versa) on the GR10 (the long-distance hiking trail that crosses the French Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean), passing through historic villages along the banks of the River Bastan. The view from the cross at St-Justin is sensational, as are the crêpes at the crêperie! For the more energetic, there's an additional loop via the Montagne Fleurie. 9.5 km, +920m, -210m for standard option, +10 km and +/- 700 m for extra loop.

Day 4

The Gavarnie cirque and its balcony paths are hard to beat... It's a classic, magnificent hike that will take you to the most famous UNESCO-listed sites in the Pyrenees. It is part of both the Pyrenees National Park and the Mont Perdu World Heritage Site. It's a Grand Site de Midi-Pyrénées, and you'll soon understand why Victor Hugo wrote a poem about it, and the romantic era writers fell in love. Multiple options today from relaxed to challenging.

Day 5

The Barrada valley rises behind the largest hydroelectric power station in the Pyrenees. At the head of the valley is the charming Cirque de Lys, a hidden gem off the beaten track. 10.5 km, +/- 700m. The Croix de Sia with a return via Sazos is a great alternative if you're outside the Gavarnie bus season or would like a shorter walk. 11 km, 490+/-m.

Day 6

The summit of Bergons offer fabulous views over the valley and there are two alternatives on this mountain that require less climbing and also offer spectacular views. 12 km, +/- 900m, +/-450 m for the peak. Shorter option possible. An alternative option on the Compostelle trail between Soulom and Luz is also an option. There are plenty of others - we can advise.
